Dred Scotts Life Matters

There have been many controversial times in the history of the United States. The two events this blog will discuss will be the court case between Dred Scott and Sanford, and the other is The Black Lives Matter Movement and Police Brutality.

Both of these topics can be explained by one word, Discrimination. Since the beginning of slavery to the modern day blacks have been looked down upon in many circumstances. Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom but was denied because he was property and therefore, had no right to sue in the Supreme Court of the United States. Police Brutality is a new form of discrimination among the black people. Although it was still occurring it wasn't known to the public until the death of Michael Brown a young black male who was shot and killed for allegedly stealing cigarillos. It wasn't just the fact that the young man was killed by police, it was how the police reacted to the situation that angered the black community and erupted the Black Lives Matter Movement. After Brown was pronounced dead, his body laid in the street for hours for all to see as if the police were making an example of him. There was no rush to clean up the scene or at least shield it from the publics' eyes. It is not common to get on social media or watch the news without hearing or seeing these events from released dashcam videos or videos taken by the public.

The controversy behind these events is when is the land of the free really going to be the land of the free. Under the 13th and 14th Amendments the black population are citizens, so why are they still treated as less?
